On one of our jaunts in Atlantic City, we stumbled upon a museum-quality installation of Hollywood memorabilia that included ceramic casts of famous movie stars’ heads: Grace Kelly, Vivien Leigh, Joan Crawford, and Hedy Lamarr. I remember Pearl saying to me they were all beautiful actresses, but the one who had the most perfect features was Hedy Lamarr.
Lamarr was more than a pretty face. I doubt if Pearl knew that Hedy collaborated with her neighbor, George Antheil, to create a frequency-hopping system that would keep enemies from being able to detect radio messages. They received a patent for their idea.
Google recently honored her 101st birthday with this animated Google Doodle.
