Laura — Matt Monro

Pearl had a lovely voice and could easily be cajoled into singing if she wasn’t on stage in front of an audience.  In the hospital, when her nurse introduced herself as Laura,  I asked Pearl to sing this for her.  Laura had never heard it.  Pity, it’s such a pretty song, with limpid lyrics by Johnny Mercer.

Many artists have covered it, including Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Eckstine (when I was young I thought he was Jewish and that his name was spelled Ecstein), Frank Sinatra, Carly Simon, Dick Haymes, and Charlie Parker.

Don’t miss “PEARL” on the side of bus at 1:31 in the video.
