South Street — The Orlons

Mel Grant  was a record distributor (right up Pearl’s alley) who rubbed elbows with local radio disc jockeys Hy Lit and Jerry Blavat. Mel gave me a DJ Copy of ♫South Street, a 1963 album by Philadelphia’s Orlons. Pearl called him “Mel the Beat” –he deserved the moniker of beatnik because he sported a goatee, hung out in bohemian New Hope, wore handmade Fred Braun sandals and vintage Ray-Ban sunglasses. Mel was one of the first men to come on the scene after Pearl’s divorce.
