As a great mother, Pearl knew that exposing me to music, dance, art, puppet shows and theater was essential.
She gave me a set of records, Sparky’s Magic Piano (although the mechanical voice frightened me). In it, Sparky “plays” Etude, Op. 10, No. 4 by Chopin, Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 by Liszt, Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, Chopin Waltz in C sharp minor. His Prelude in C sharp minor by Rachmaninoff is with the New York Philharmonic. But, when he attempts to play the Spinning Song by Mendelssohn his magic piano goes on strike.
Obstacles like that were a breeze for Pearl because she took everything in stride and nothing stopped her. It’s empowering when you’re raised by someone with that kind of gumption.
